Drinking from a plastic mug doesn’t feel like camping—it feels like compromise. Kupilka, a Finnish family company that’s been perfecting camp dinnerware for two decades, proves that outdoor gear can be both lightweight and rooted in Nordic tradition. Built from their proprietary Kareline composite (a blend of Nordic softwood and food-grade thermoplastics), these cups have earned a cult following among ultralight backpackers, bushcraft enthusiasts, and anyone who values the ritual of fire-brewed coffee out of something that actually feels like it belongs in the wilderness.

BRAND INTRO

Kupilka began in the early 2000s when product designers Koivurova and Kuisma created the Kupilka 21 cup, inspired by the harakkakuppi—a traditional tasting cup used in Kuisma’s family for generations. Rooted in the Karelia region of Finland (historically known for wooden cup-carving), the company is family-owned and based in Kontiolahti, North Karelia. They design and manufacture all products in-house using their proprietary Kareline natural fibre composite, with a core mission to create durable, sustainable outdoor gear that respects nature.

INSPIRING STORY

The Kupilka 21 is still the company’s signature product after 20+ years in production—a testament to timeless design. What makes the story remarkable is the company’s commitment to renewable energy: Kupilka became one of Finland’s first users of eco-labelled renewable electricity in 1998, before most companies had even heard of carbon neutrality. Over 25 years later, they still manufacture every product using EKOenergy-certified renewable power (biogas, wind, and hydropower built before 1996). Users report keeping their original Kupilka cups from 20 years ago still in active use, the Kareline material developing a beautiful patina over time without compromising function—a living example of design for longevity.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

You’re a camper, hiker, or bushcraft enthusiast who refuses cheap disposable gear. You count grams on long expeditions but won’t sacrifice durability or that tactile, grounded feeling of holding something real around a campfire. You prefer equipment that works equally well whether you’re sipping morning coffee at -30°C or eating hot stew in summer. You appreciate transparency about production and origins. You’re willing to invest in products designed to last decades, not seasons.
