Most waterproof bags are waterproof until they aren’t. Ortlieb has spent over four decades proving that “waterproof” is not a marketing claim — it is an engineering standard. When Hartmut Ortlieb couldn’t find reliable waterproof panniers in 1982, he built his own. That same refusal to accept inferior solutions still drives every bag that leaves Heilsbronn today.

Ortlieb was founded in 1982 by Hartmut Ortlieb in Nuremberg, Germany, after he and friend Peter Wittwer began making waterproof bags out of personal necessity — the market simply didn’t offer anything good enough. The company relocated to Heilsbronn, Bavaria in 1997, where it remains today with over 300 employees. Co-led by Hartmut Ortlieb and Martin Esslinger, Ortlieb produces waterproof panniers, backpacks, travel bags, and camera bags — and holds the position of global market leader in waterproof bicycle panniers. Ninety per cent of all production processes are handled in-house at Heilsbronn.
Inspiring Story
In 1982, Hartmut Ortlieb and his friend Peter Wittwer bought their own sewing machines and started making bags that were — in Hartmut’s words — “more virtually unbreakable, very functional bags than they could ever use.” They shared the work with family and friends, and what started as a personal solution became one of Germany’s most respected outdoor brands. Today, Ortlieb still shares its Heilsbronn building with Tizip — another company Hartmut founded — which makes 100% waterproof zips, also Made in Germany. The obsession never stopped. It just scaled.
