Most jeans are born somewhere in Asia, assembled in three countries, and shipped halfway around the world before they reach your wardrobe. Atelier Tuffery does the opposite: every cut, stitch, and wash happens in a single atelier in Florac, a town of 2,000 people deep in the French Cévennes. This family has been making jeans since 1892 — before denim was even called denim in Europe — and they have never outsourced a single seam.

Brand Intro

Founded in 1892 by Célestin Tuffery in Florac, Lozère, Atelier Tuffery is widely recognised as the oldest and last surviving French jean manufacturer. Now led by fourth-generation descendant Julien Tuffery, the family business employs a small team of 11–50 craftspeople at their atelier in the ZA Saint Julien du Gourg industrial zone on the edge of the Cévennes national park. Every piece — from design to cutting, sewing, assembly and washing — is produced entirely in France, using organic cotton certified GOTS, natural indigo, hemp, and locally sourced French wool.

Inspiring Story

In 1892, a 17-year-old named Célestin Tuffery opened a small tailoring workshop in Florac to clothe the railway workers arriving to build the line through the Cévennes. He bought cotton canvas from Nîmes, dyed it indigo, and cut his first workwear trousers — robust, functional, and made to last. What nobody knew then was that this modest act of practical tailoring would become the origin of one of France’s first jeans. More than 130 years later, his great-grandson Julien stands in the same region, cutting selvedge denim by hand, and has recently gone even further: building a flock of 300 Mérinos sheep to supply the atelier’s own French wool, creating a true farm-to-fabric supply chain.

Who is this for?

You care about where your clothes come from — not as a trend, but as a conviction. You’ve worn enough €60 jeans that fell apart after a year, and you’re done with that cycle. You want a pair that improves with age, can be repaired rather than replaced, and whose entire journey — from raw cotton to finished seam — you can trace to a single workshop in southern France. You’re also willing to invest in fewer, better pieces rather than filling a wardrobe with disposable fashion.
