Hiatus was founded in Nîmes in 2008 by designers Jennifer Marano and Jean-Guy Beal — a French duo with a shared conviction that men’s fashion has been unfairly constrained. The brand is entirely dedicated to male skirted garments: kilts, neo-kilts, hakamas, and contemporary wraps. Every piece is drawn, cut, and sewn by Jean-Guy in his workshop in Usson-en-Forez, Auvergne, only after an order is placed. Fabrics are sourced from European textiles, keeping the production chain both local and conscious.

Inspiring Story

In 2008, two French designers in Nîmes asked a simple question: why is the skirt exclusively female territory in Western fashion? Jennifer Marano and Jean-Guy Beal launched Hiatus as the first French ready-to-wear brand to answer that question with garments rather than words. Today, Jean-Guy still sews every order himself in his Auvergne workshop. The make-to-order model means nothing is wasted — no overstock, no unsold inventory, no compromise.
