European outdoor brands still make shoes on home soil — but most have split production across several countries. BOREAL never did. Since 1979, every shoe comes from one factory, in one town: Villena, Spain. It was here, working with Spain’s boldest rock climbers, that sticky rubber for climbing was born.
Brand Intro
Jesús García López Senior founded BOREAL in 1975 in Villena — a small city in Alicante with centuries of footwear tradition. His son Jesús Junior now leads the company. Their first climbing shoe, the legendary Firé, appeared in 1979 with a rubber compound they developed themselves. Today, BOREAL makes climbing shoes, trail running shoes, and mountaineering boots — all in the same Villena factory, using raw materials sourced mostly from within Europe.
Inspiring Story
In 1980, the Gallego brothers wore BOREAL Firé shoes to open the first non-American route on El Capitan in Yosemite — a line they called Mediterraneo. Back at Camp 4, they passed the shoes around. John Bachar, one of climbing’s greatest free soloists, tried them on Midnight Lightning and was stunned. By 1983, he partnered with BOREAL to sell shoes at the Yosemite Mountain Shop. On the first day, 265 pairs sold out in under two hours. The sticky rubber revolution was made in Spain.

Who is this for?
You climb outdoors and you’ve stopped trusting cheap rubber that loses friction halfway up a route. You hike in mountains where your boots need to last — not just one season, but years. You travel with gear you can trust at 3,000m and care whether it was built by skilled hands or batch-produced overseas. You want footwear with a traceable story: made in one factory, in one town, by craftspeople who have worked there their entire careers.
