Most outdoor gear claims to care about the environment. Artefact actually proves it — by refusing to use virgin materials altogether. Instead of designing a bag and then sourcing fabric, they start with what already exists: kite wings past their flight life, zodiac boat canvas, hot-air balloon fabric. The bag comes second; the rescued material comes first.

Brand Intro

Artefact was founded in Lille, France, by Benoît Gourlet and Maxime [Research needed — full surname of co-founder]. Their mission: make the outdoor industry circular by turning discarded technical materials into high-performance bags. Starting from a small office on Rue Royale in Lille, they bootstrapped the brand via crowdfunding in 2019. Backpacks are produced in a specialist family workshop south of Porto, Portugal. Accessories — bike bags, fanny packs, covers — are made in Lille and Calais, including in ESATs (sheltered workshops employing people with disabilities).

Inspiring Story

Artefact’s first backpack, the Granite, was made from end-of-life inflatable kayaks and climbing mats — sewn at a sheltered workshop in Calais. The ambition was right; the execution hit a wall. Machines weren’t adapted for technical luggage. Thread and needles were undersized. Shoulder straps failed. Rather than hiding the problem, co-founder Benoît documented it publicly in full.

The lesson became the brand’s turning point. For their next bag, they travelled further — to a family workshop south of Porto, a specialist in technical luggage. The result transformed their reputation. Customer reviews shifted from complaints to praise. The failure wasn’t a setback; it was the brief for everything that followed.

Who is this for?

You cycle, hike or climb regularly, and you’ve grown tired of gear that looks identical to everything else and wears out in two seasons. You want something that carries its own story in the fabric — literally. You’re not looking for a logo; you’re looking for a product with a traceable origin and a purpose beyond fashion. You buy less, but you buy right. And you’d rather your money stay in Europe.
