Most ultralight gear starts in a corporate lab. Wild Sky Gear started with a 15-year-old on a solo winter hike across Britain, sewing his own kit because nothing light enough existed at a price he could afford. Founder Skye McGregor has since built a one-person cottage brand — every item handmade in the UK — with over 4,600 customer reviews from hikers worldwide.

Transparency note: The Wild Sky Gear website also stocks third-party accessories from brands like Nitecore. This article focuses exclusively on products designed and handmade by Wild Sky Gear itself.

Brand Intro

Wild Sky Gear was founded in 2019 by Skye McGregor after his solo winter thru-hike of the Land’s End to John O’Groats route in the UK. Based in London, he specialises in Dyneema® Composite Fabric (DCF) gear — tarps, dry bags, packing cells, pouches, stakes, and accessories — all designed, tested, and handmade in Britain. Products ship worldwide with free international shipping and same-day dispatch, and custom-made versions are available to order.

Inspiring Story

At 15, Skye McGregor set out alone to hike the length of Britain in winter — a route of over 1,400km through rain, mud, and cold. To manage the weight, he began sewing his own ultralight gear from DCF fabric, refining designs on the trail itself. When fellow hikers repeatedly asked where to buy his kit, Wild Sky Gear was born. What started as surplus gear sold to friends is now a small but internationally respected cottage brand, with customers across Europe, North America, and beyond.

Who is this for?

You’ve counted the grams in your pack and refuse to carry dead weight. You pitch a tarp instead of a tent, carry a 9g torch instead of a lantern, and repair DCF fabric rather than replace it. If you’re building a sub-5kg base weight and want handmade UK accessories that don’t compromise on strength, Wild Sky Gear is built for exactly your kit list.
