Most jeans are made by the millions. Hiut Denim makes around 100 pairs a week — by hand, by a team of fewer than 15 people, in a small Welsh town. That deliberate restraint is not a limitation; it is the entire point. When a brand’s philosophy is “Do One Thing Well,” every stitch carries the weight of that promise.
Brand Intro
Hiut Denim Co. was founded in 2011 by husband and wife David and Clare Hieatt in Cardigan, Wales. The town had been home to Britain’s largest jeans factory, which at its peak employed over 400 skilled artisans producing 35,000 pairs a week before closing in 2002. David and Clare set out not to simply make jeans, but to bring those lost jobs — and that lost knowledge — back home. Today, their team of Grand Masters and apprentices produces premium selvedge and raw denim jeans entirely in-house, in deliberately small quantities, designed to last for years
Inspiring Story
When the last jeans factory in Cardigan shut its doors in 2002, 400 people lost their jobs. The skills didn’t disappear — they stayed in the town, quietly waiting. David Hieatt, a proud Welshman and experienced brand builder, saw something others had overlooked: a community of craftspeople with decades of denim knowledge and nowhere to put it. When he opened Hiut Denim’s factory a decade later, some of those original workers came back. They are now called Grand Masters — Hiut’s most senior artisans, responsible for setting the standard and training the next generation. It is one of the most quietly radical acts in modern manufacturing: a business built not just to sell jeans, but to keep a craft — and a community — alive.
Who is this for?
You buy fewer things, but better things. You’ve grown tired of jeans that fade badly after six months and fall apart after two years. You want to know who made what you wear, and where, and why. You appreciate objects that improve with age — that tell a story through their wear patterns. And you’re willing to invest once, rather than replace repeatedly. If you believe the way we make things shapes the kind of world we live in, Hiut is for you.
