Most outdoor brands talk about sustainability while manufacturing in Asia. Mufflon does the opposite — and has been doing it quietly for over thirty years. In a small factory in northern Germany, pure wool transforms into garments that work on the trail and look right in the village. No synthetic blends, no overseas production, no compromise. Some owners are still wearing the same jacket a decade or two later.
Brand Intro
Mufflon was founded in Wahlstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, in 1984 by Andrea and Frank Schürmeyer. The Mufflon brand name and its wool clothing line launched in 1998, focusing exclusively on milled (boiled) wool and merino wool garments. Almost 100% of the machines, yarn, materials, and workmanship come from Germany and the EU — making Mufflon one of the very few outdoor clothing brands still producing entirely on German soil. Their three material weights — W300 (heavy boiled wool, ~800g/m²), W100 (merino, ~450g/m²), and lighter merino for close-to-skin use — cover everything from trail to daily wear.
Inspiring Story
The fulling process Mufflon uses is thousands of years old. Raw wool fabric is knitted, then milled — compressed and matted under heat and moisture — into dense, wind-resistant boiled wool. Each piece is then cut, embroidered, and sewn in countless steps at their Wahlstedt factory. Since 2011, a significant portion of the factory’s electricity comes from an on-site photovoltaic system. But perhaps the most telling detail is this: people who bought a Mufflon jacket years ago are still wearing it. Not because they had to — but because it never stopped performing. This is clothing built to outlast fashion cycles entirely.
Who is this for?
You spend your weekends outdoors — hiking, hunting, or simply walking the dog in all weather. You’ve grown tired of fleece that pills after a season and synthetic jackets that feel clammy. You want clothing that breathes naturally, handles light rain without fuss, and looks good enough to wear straight into a café afterwards. You buy less but buy better, and you care where your gear comes from. And frankly — you want something you can hand down.
