Minimalist doesn’t mean compromise. Panta Sandals proves that European craftsmanship can create ultra-thin running sandals that honour 3,000 years of heritage whilst embracing modern biomechanics. When you strip away everything unnecessary, what remains is pure connection between foot and earth – exactly as the Greek hemerodromoi intended when they ran hundreds of miles weekly across ancient city states.
Brand Intro
Panta Sandals was founded by Roald Hoope, an avid trail runner and design engineer who started crafting sandals in his Haarlem attic workshop in 2016. Taught by a local master shoemaker, Roald built a following amongst European ultra-runners who valued his “advanced minimalism” philosophy – optimal functionality through the best materials and most efficient processes. In 2017, Bram van der Laan joined as partner, bringing graphic design expertise and scaling production whilst maintaining the handcrafted ethos. All sandals are made in the EU using Vibram rubber from Italy and webbing from Germany, with production now split between Haarlem and São João da Madeira, Portugal.
Inspiring Story
The Panta journey began with a simple challenge: could European runners access truly minimalist sandals without ordering from overseas? Roald’s background in design engineering collided with his passion for natural movement. He studied under a local shoemaker, learning traditional techniques, then adapted them for modern barefoot running. Those early prototypes, tested on trails near his Haarlem home, caught attention at ultra-running events. Word spread through the European trail community – here was someone obsessed with cutting every unnecessary gram whilst maintaining durability. By 2017, demand outgrew the attic workshop. Rather than outsource overseas, Roald partnered with Portuguese craftspeople, keeping production firmly within Europe. Each sandal still receives hands-on attention: the strap sewing, gluing process, final assembly and lacing all involve human precision.

Who is this for?
You’re committed to natural movement and you’ve done the barefoot research. You understand that proprioception isn’t marketing jargon – it’s how your feet communicate with your brain about terrain. You want sandals for long trail runs, not afternoon strolls. You count grams because you know that every 100 grams saved at your feet equals 5 kilograms less energy expenditure over a marathon. You refuse to compromise on materials: if the Vibram sole isn’t from Italy or the strap isn’t premium tubular nylon, you’re not interested. You value European craftsmanship and transparent production. You’re patient enough to dial in the 3-in-1 strap system because you know proper fit transforms performance.
