Most camping stoves need gas canisters, fuel tablets, or careful planning. Bushcraft Essentials had a different idea: what if the forest floor itself was your fuel? Founded on that simple insight, this German brand has built a cult following across Europe and beyond with a stove that burns twigs, leaves, and organic debris — and folds completely flat when you’re done.

Brand Intro

Bushcraft Essentials was founded by Detlev Hoppenrath, a bushcraft veteran based near Munich, Germany. The brand was born from Hoppenrath’s personal experience using the outdoors for rehabilitation during illness — nature healed him, and he wanted to give something back to outdoor enthusiasts. Their flagship product, the Bushbox, is a collapsible multi-fuel pocket stove made from 100% stainless steel (or titanium), designed and manufactured entirely in Erding. The company exports to over 80 countries and uses no plastic in products or packaging.

Beyond stoves, Bushcraft Essentials produces the Wool Essentials Active Wear Jacket — handcrafted in Germany from 100% virgin wool and traditional loden fabric, sourced from one of the last remaining knitting mills in the country. Naturally fire-retardant, water-repellent, and silent in the field, it is the textile equivalent of their stove philosophy: no synthetics, no shortcuts.

Inspiring Story

Detlev Hoppenrath was recovering from a debilitating illness when he first walked Germany’s ancient woodlands and alpine ranges. Inspired by so-called “hobo stoves” — survivalist burners crafted from tin cans — he set himself a challenge: could he build something far more refined, efficient, and safe for use in Germany’s National Parks, where open fires are tightly regulated? The result was the first Bushbox: interlocking sheets of metal with unique hinges, collapsing perfectly flat for your pack, but erecting in seconds when you need fire. One design. One man’s recovery. Decades of loyal fans.

Who is this for?

You head into the woods with as little gear as possible. You don’t want to carry gas canisters or worry about running out of fuel — you want to use what the forest gives you. You appreciate tools built to last a lifetime, not a season. Whether you’re a solo bushcrafter, a bikepacker crossing Europe, or someone who simply wants a more elemental way to boil water outdoors, the Bushbox was made for you.
