A tipi that weighs under 750 grams and goes up with one trekking pole in under five minutes — that’s not a concept, it’s a Pioulou. Xavier Nitsch has been making ultralight shelters by hand in the French Tarn since 2017, and his waiting list speaks for itself. At a time when most outdoor brands have moved production to Asia, Tipik proves that a single French craftsman with a workshop and a sewing machine can outperform them all — in weight, in customisation, and in service.
Brand Intro
Tipik was founded in 2017 by Xavier Nitsch in La Sauzière-Saint-Jean, a small village in the Tarn department of southern France. Xavier started making ultralight shelters in 2011 for his own use, searching for designs light enough for cycling, hiking, and long expeditions. For seven years he ran the entire operation alone — design, sewing, customer contact, and dispatch. Two years ago, Pauline joined the atelier: specialised in ultralight fabrics, she now sews approximately half of all tents. Every shelter is still produced to order in their Tarn workshop, with a repair service available for any brand.
Inspiring Story
The Pioulou didn’t arrive fully formed — it was developed methodically between 2016 and 2018, drawing on everything Xavier had learned designing two-person shelters on long expeditions, including an eight-month South America crossing in 2015. Every prototype was field-tested before becoming a product. When the ultralight community in forums across Europe and the US discovered the result, word spread fast: a French-made solo tipi that resists winds over 100 km/h, sets up with a single trekking pole, and weighs under 750 grams. One Backpacking Light forum member summarised it: “Xavier is very easy to talk to. He responds quickly and in great detail.” With Pauline now part of the atelier, that personal responsiveness hasn’t changed — it’s just backed by twice the sewing capacity.
Who is this for?
You’ve weighed your shelter and it’s the first thing you want to change. You hike for days or weeks at a time, and you’ve learned that a lighter pack changes everything about how far and how freely you move. You want a shelter that handles real conditions — alpine wind, Pyrenean rain, Scandinavian cold — without a second pole, a complicated setup, or a gram wasted. You want to talk directly to the person who sews it, adjust the specs to your height or terrain, and know exactly what you’re getting.
